The vital Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed for the traffic due to heavy landslides that occurred about 15 km from here today.
The authorities said the restoration of traffic on the highway could take two days.
As per reports, the company engaged in the four-laning of the highway has deployed JCB machines to clear the debris.
Official sources said a huge landslide occurred near Balinallah, Bansa Pul, resulting in the blockage of the highway. Long queues of vehicles could be seen on both sides of the road. The authorities have deployed men and machinery for the restoration of the road, but the clearance of mud, boulders and debris would be a daunting task as huge slides and shooting stones from the hill have been creating problems.
Moreover, a bridge over the highway was fully damaged.
“Traffic has been stopped on the national highway after the landslides,” said Rayees Ahmed Bhat, Udhampur SSP. Men and machinery have been deployed to restore the traffic on the highway, he said, adding “traffic from J&K will be routed through the Mughal road”.
After waiting for hours together, local police officers announced that traffic would not move towards Kashmir and it would take more than two days to restore the road.
